History: The position of drum major originated in the British Army with the Corps of Drum in 1650. With the arrival of military concert bands and pipe bands around the 18th Century, the position of drum major was adapted to those ensembles. In the British Army, a drum major holds the rank of sergeant, staff sergeant or color sergeant. The insignia is 3 inverted chevrons surmounted by a drum.
In the artist’s opinion, Joe Hosch exemplifies the quintessential drum sergeant. Standing over 7 feet tall in full regalia, Joe strikes an unforgettable, regal pose as he dominates the scene marching before a band.
This painting was done from artist’s study photographs done of the subject.
