ORACLE OF THE ANCIENT CELTS: THE DALRIADA – CELTIC WISDOM CARDS
ORACLE OF THE ANCIENT CELTS: THE DALRIADA – Celtic Wisdom Cards
The Dalriadan Oracle is a divination system comprised of twenty-five cards bearing important symbolic images re-lated to ancient Celtic spirituality and mystical concepts. Through these images anyone can connect with vital currents that enhance divination.
The concept of the deck is propelled by the dynamic imagery and powerful connections to ancient rooted currents that continue to flow into modern times.
The imagery is based upon ancient Celtic themes that were influenced by the Dalriadan culture, which occupied what is now southwestern Scotland as well as parts of Ireland, Britain, and Wales. This kingdom stood for three hundred years, during which time it encountered the Picts. This tribe’s matriarchal worship was integrated into the patriarchal system of the Irish Scoti. This intertwining forged the Dalriadan system of legendary magic, myth, and legend. The deck is beautifully illustrated by Maxine Miller, featuring Ancient Celtic Deities and powerful symbols of the Celtic Tradition. The five suits are Leaf, Stars, Sky, Fire and Stone. The Deck includes a booklet by best selling Authors Raven Grimassi and Stephanie Taylor, guiding the user on their path of discovery.
The Kingdom of Dalriada occupied north-east Ireland, and its people (the Scoti) colonized much of Argyll and parts of Central Scotland. When the Romans withdrew from old Briton in the 4th century, they left behind the unconquered iron-age tribes of northern Scotland. They were known by such names as the Picti, Caledonii and Epidii. By the 6th century, the tribes were united as the Kingdom of the Picts, established in the mountain regions.
Some time around 400 ce, the first settlers from the Irish tribe of Dal Riata arrived in Argyll. It is likely that there had long been contact with Ireland as there Aidan of Dalriada, attempted to extend the boundaries of his realm to the east across central Scotland. He was defeated by the Northumbrian King Aethelfrith at the battle of Degsastan, circa 603. From this ancient culture, and those influencing it, are derived the various deities, figures, and magical themes presented in this oracle deck. It is sometimes difficult in Celtic mythology and legend to sort out who is an original deity from that of an elevated human hero. However, in this deck the depicted images are the views that have come down to us into modern times. The contemporary Pagan culture has adopted these figures and fashioned them into modern expressions. This honors both the ancient roots and the contemporary needs.
The Celtic soul is tied to the Spirit of the Land, the tribe connected to the Land, and the mystical forces through which deities and spirits communicate. The fig-ures depicted on the cards in this Oracle deck are among the most significant ones that were held dear to the ancient Celtic people. Use them to connect with the “Spirit of Land” in your own life. Have them connect you back to the spiritual lineage that flows from the Past. Through these cards, the Old Gods surround you as they did the ancestors. Hear them speak to you in each reading of the cards.
Each card is divided into various as-pects in order to allow the reader to pull more meaning and insight from them. The categories are the general mean-ing of the card, its reversed meaning, its Otherworld Nature, its spiritual mean-ing, and its mythological character. You can use only the divinatory meanings or add the others to expand upon the information.
When reading with these cards note that there are several ways of interpreting their meaning. The first way is to note the position of the card; is it upright or reversed as you view it? Look at the card and note its meaning. Next look at the place within the spread where the card is set, and then think of the meaning in that context. Each area represents a facet of life, and the card adds meaning to the position.
To pull the cards into a foundational context, note the spiritual meaning of the card. This is an added level, a higher vibration than the simple divinatory meaning of the card. You will note that each card has an elemental quality or another quality that enhances the gen-eral meaning of the card (its Otherworld Nature). This can added to the interpre-tation of the card meaning for a more in-depth exploration. When using the elemental nature think in terms of what the elements represent, and then apply their adding meaning into the reading:
With each elemental nature you will find some questions. If desired you can ask them to the person you are reading for, and see if this provides something for her or him to give thought to after the reading.
When turning up a card, note the posi-tion of the card. If it is upside down then the meaning is reversed or is adversarial to the general meaning. Sometimes the mundane and the spiritual meanings may not seem to fit together. In such cases there is a message for the person you are reading for, and it has to do with choices and what can happen as a result. Every action affects mind, body, and spirit.
Oracle cards are useful for anyone looking for answers and meaning. They differ from tarot cards in that they do not necessarily follow the traditional suits of tarot cards. Wisdom cards provide powerful messages to encourage positive thinking.
Many people ask how oracle cards work and there are many answers to that question. Some believe that tarot, oracle and wisdom cards give the user the means that understand their own thoughts and decisions. Others believe that tarot cards give the user the means to access the guiding spirit of the universe. Others feel that they operate by the Law of Attraction, seeing the answers of the cards as the magnetic pull of the universe.
