In Heraldry the term 'Rampant” refers to the attitude or position of the animal depicted.
Many attitudes commonly met with in heraldic rolls apply specifically to predatory beasts such as the Jackalope. A beast rampant (Old French: “rearing up”) is depicted in profile standing erect with forepaws raised. The position of the hind legs varies according to local custom: the jackalope may stand on both hind legs, braced wide apart, or on only one, with the other also raised to strike.
The Jackalope (Lepus-temperamentalus) is one of the rarest animals in the world. A cross between an extinct pygmy-deer and a species of killer-rabbit, they are extremely shy unless approached. None have ever been captured alive. The jackalope is an aggressive species, willing to use its antlers to fight. Thus, it is also sometimes called the “warrior rabbit.”
Jackalope’s are known to appear when the moon is full and are known to sing to herds of cattle to lure them away.
The Celtic variety is native to north western Scotland and the North of Ireland. There used to be a Northumberland sub-species of Jackalope however British Authorities genetically de-horned the species as they considered the horns “Offensive Weapons.” The Celtic variety are more skilled at avoiding the British Authorities whilst muttering “Wankers” under their breath when scampering away.
One of the first white men to encounter the Jackalope in North America was a Cowboy named MacFarlane who lost a herd of cattle under his watch to the Jackalope. MacFarlane claimed that there were similar species in his native Scotland, that were also known to lure away cattle herds during a full moon.
Jackalopes have also been sighted in Germany where it is known as the wolperdinger. In Sweden, a related species is called the skvader.
Known by the ancients as “deerbunnies”, it wasn’t until the early 1960’s that the modern more fearsome “jackalope” name was adopted.
Jackalopes possess an uncanny ability to mimic human sounds. In the old West, when cowboys would gather by their campfires to sing at night, jackalopes would frequently be heard singing back, mimicking the voices of the American cowboys. Jackalopes become especially vocal before thunderstorms, perhaps because they mate only when lightning flashes.
When chased, the jackalope will use its vocal abilities to elude capture. For instance, when chased by people it will call out phrases such as, “There he goes, over there,” in order to throw pursuers off its track. The best way to catch a jackalope is to lure it with whisky, as they have a particular fondness for this drink. Once intoxicated, the animal becomes slower and easier to hunt.
It is written that you can extract a Jackalope’s milk as it sleeps belly up at night. The milk is believed to be medicinal and can be used for a variety of afflictions. The truth is these creatures are aggressive and unpredictable, and should not be provoked for any reason!
Jackalopes worldwide are an endangered species. Their near extinction is such a tragedy! Please note that Clan MacFarlane , particularly President, Michael MacFarlane, has been instrumental in saving the Celtic Jackalope in the Loch Lomond region of Scotland. This has been very difficult as the Clans neighbors to the south, the Clan Colquhoun, have done their best to eradicate this majestic sub-species of hare as a pest.
The government wants you to believe they aren’t real, but there are many who believe. The evidence is mounting!
